Low income for MedTeks?

Ever wonder why some Med Teks settle for minimum wage? Honestly, I already worked for minimum wage as a Med Tek. I lived in Metro Manila and worked in two private hospitals already, both tertiary, but both offered a minimum salary wage. Unfair isn't it? Considering the number of laboratory exams per day, I think laboratory staffs deserve a bit higher amount of income. After all, the laboratory is arguably the biggest earner inside the hospital (maybe ahead or second to pharmacy). I have even heard that a gross income of a tertiary laboratory in Metro Manila ranges from 8 million pesos to 20 million pesos per month. And if all this information is true, then why do we get an unfair amount of salary?

Let's continue whining...hahaha! In comparison with other non-medical 4-years/5-years course professionals,   we can not say that are salaries are competitive with them. All allied health professionals (nurse, rad techs, PTs,etc.) have the same dilemma as we do. All of us can not compare our incomes with other non-medical professionals. But the work we do is probably as hard as what they do, and I'm not even considering the potential health hazards that we may encounter. I'm not saying they don't deserve the money they worked for, all I'm trying to get to is that we also have the right to earn as much as they do.

On a brighter note, there is no money that could pay us on what marvelous and "heroic" acts that we give our patients. Kahit na magalit pa sila sa kaka-extract natin ng blood, we still continue to strive to do our best for them. It is true and sad that maybe we are not much appreciated hence the low income. And much saddening to know that we are not even recognized by the patients that we give service to. How many times did you encounter that a patient called you a nurse? or said something like "Nurse, nurse pa-check naman ng I.V.?" But do not be discouraged my fellow Med Teks. This is our dedication. This is our passion. This is what we are and who we are. Perhaps, we are the true unsung heroes of the modern world. The unknown martyrs of the hospitals.
