to leave or not to leave?

"To be, or not to be, that is the question" And yes, the title of the post was an idea taken from Hamlet.
No plagiarism intended, I'm not Sen. Tito Sotto. Hahaha! I'm just kidding, no bashing intended and I'm a big fan of Eat Bulaga. Wink!

I have worked long enough as a Med Tek here in the Phlippines to give an opinion on working abroad or not. Although I have not been away for so long, I believe that I could express my thoughts well enough regarding this matter.

Family. It is probably the biggest factor you have to consider before working abroad. Is it alright to leave your retired aging parents? Can you leave your children behind? Can you leave your spouse without having issues on trust? These are just a few of the many questions you have to answer before working
abroad. I even believe that some Med teks were not able to work abroad because their families or relative are not supportive, or just maybe protective. Either way, the Med tek should decide for himself/herself. It is hard to choose between family and career but you have to make a decision that will benefit you and maybe your family's future too.

Money. Does it really makes the world go round? Unfortunately, arguably, hard to admit and I don't want to say it but yes. Whew! For some Med Teks who go abroad, this is the only reason why they go there in the first place. Many Med teks, sadly, are not satisfied with the income they receive here in the Philippines.  We really could not say that we are financially competitive. Foreign countries offer thrice or as much as four times the salary we earn here in the Philippines. I don't think there is much to say here.

Career. Some people actually think that "career growth" has been over used and it's just a lame excuse to get a new job. But the truth is, it is very important that you still grow in your chosen career.  Let's face it, if you're working in a private hospital, you are probably going to get promoted at least twice or thrice in your lifetime. The first one is from being a "junior" to a "senior" (which technically might not count because some hospitals have the same salary grade for both junior and senior staff). The second one is being promoted to a section head. And lastly, being the assistant to the chief med tek or the being the chief med tek yourself. I'm not saying you're going to get promoted every month abroad, but having a foreign hospital written in your resume might give you an advantage. Working abroad can give you an opportunity to work in a different field. This may help you widen your experience. Working abroad can also help you unlimit your boundaries which is essential in career growth.

So to answer the question: To leave or not to leave? My answer is: why not?! Your career will grow, your going to get more money and above all, a lot of people here in the Philippines will surely miss you! As long as you are willing and ready to work abroad then go for it. But how about the rest of us who are not ready or don't have the slightest urge to work abroad? Well, I don't really see a problem with that. At least, we would not worry about leaving our family and friends. We would not be scared of scams and some cruel foreigners (I said some). We don't have to adjust to other cultures and traditions. And, I would be much pleased giving service to fellow Filipinos. I guess there are Pros and Cons on working abroad or not. But the fact still remains that the decision is up to you, the Med Tek. It is your life after all, you have to decide for yourself.
